Good morning folks,

this week, the Royal Wedding loomed ever closer, and most of us wondered who all these people were who put the Mirror’s Royal Wedding poster in their windows. Pretty much nothing else happened this week. Well, accordingly to the media, anyway.

In the meantime: The Libyan civil war rages on, President Saleh has agreed to step down as President of Yemen, there’s just some dispute as to when, and a media blackout has been imposed on Syria as tanks have started rolling into towns and villages. In Britain, politicians are accusing each other over lying about AV, and people don’t like Tesco.

Good morning folks,

this week, it became evident that the AV referendum was probably going to lose, but it was never going to change much anyway, and Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s troubles got worse as the Royal College of Nursing voted near unaminously for a vote of no confidence in him, and Nick Clegg started making noises about “changing NHS reforms or lose Lib Dem support‎”. Brilliantly, Lansley argued that the College had voted “for the principles” behind his plan to sell our health to the highest bidder.

Oh and Liberty reckons ‘Cuts march police too focused on kettling’ on the 26th March – http://bbc.in/gp2SYM Nice of them to say so.

In the mean time: did you witness the policeman falling off his horse at the student fees protest on the 9th December? Two activists need witnesses for their defence: http://www.sarahmcculloch.com/blog/2011/04/18/wanted-9th-december-student-fees-protest/

Workers don’t need Bosses!

A gathering for all those who want to help build a militant working class mass movement against the cuts, controlled by the grassroots.

The Cowley Club, Brighton, 12th to 13th of March 2011.

The TUC have called a legal, peaceful demonstration in central London on the 26th of March that over one million people are expected to attend, in opposition to the government’s public sector cuts. This will be the biggest demonstration in Britain since the anti-Iraq war protests of 2003.

However, as we all know, those protests were unsuccessful, showing that peaceful protest alone will not stop a government from acting against the people’s will. Strikes, occupations, civil disobedience, in short: DIRECT ACTION is what really gets results for the working class against the bosses and their government.

For these reasons in early January a national anti-cuts gathering held in Manchester (Network X) called for all those attending the demonstration on March 26th not to limit themselves to the TUC leader’s plans, but to use their own initiative and take direct action.

Network X also called for the demonstration not to be limited to unionised workers but to include all sectors of society affected by the cuts, such as benefits claimants, students, and non-unionised workers. To build the links between these different sectors of the working class it is obvious we need to go beyond the structures of official trades unions.

The Brighton gathering is intended for those who intend to respond to this call out to meet, network and discuss how best we can help the development of working class militancy, both on the demonstration and in the aftermath.

As well as organisational meetings there will be practical workshops on:

Workplace organising,

Legal and emotional support for demonstrators,

Fighting gender privilege in the anti-cuts movement

First aid,

Direct action training,

Producing grassroots publicity and alternative media

Food and accommodation will be available and there will be a benefit concert on the first evening of the gathering to cover the costs.

Email brighton@afed.org.uk for more information, or to get involved

Network X is only a network of different groups trying to organise against the cuts in a leaderless fashion. There are no spokespeople for it, as there cannot be at this stage – there are only two things that have been undertaken as a network to express as one organisation. They are a statement on class struggle and a call out for the 26th of March – which you can find elsewhere on this site.

The article in the Sun is factually incorrect on several accounts, not least the idea that Network X is a revolutionary command organisation – we don’t know what one is and have never professed to be that. Chris Knight could not speak on behalf of Network X even if he wanted to.

6. Report backs from Networks

Media

We had a productive practical session and ideas came out for a national aggregator website. The basic features we said we wanted were:

- English language
- Focused on anti-cuts (for the time being), but with the possibility of expanding in the future
- User-filtered content: no editorial control, however some degree of moderation
- To be launched as soon as possible

The different skills required include:

- Tech and programming
- Source finding
- Webdesign
- Promotion and publicity of the site, copy when it needs to be written
- Feedback from people on matters of accessibility and aesthetics
- Somebody to put tags on articles and content?

Here is where people can sign up for the announce list: https://lists.aktivix.org/mailman/listinfo/newsagg

NINJA

NINJA will no longer be administrating anything to do with Network X, please e-mail networkx@riseup.net for Network X enquiries.

NINJA will also no longer be attempting to be an outreach network – a very cogent concern was that the name was not particularly broad in appeal! However it will still continue as a propaganda organisation, with some very cool stuff to come!

An outreach network will still be continued, potentially under the name Shout Out (yes we know it was on Network X bingo!). To find out more please e-mail ninjaction@riseup.net – this is the interim contact address until the network has been named.

The practical aims of the Outreach network, as a starting point, can be found here, http://ninjarise.wordpress.com/who-we-are/n3-2/ – please bare with us though as the rest will be edited in the coming 10 days.

So We Stand

Please hit us up with your minutes! X

7. FE Bulletin

Is being produced and prepared for distribution as we speak!
to get involved with this bulletin, lend your support with contacts, some help with distribution please get in touch with uncaptiveminds@gmail.com
or southcoast@climatecamp.org.uk in brighton, and south coast

This is to go out nationwide and they are looking for contributions from FE students to go in this (it will only be two sides of A4 so they don’t need to be very long) on topics like:

- the affect that the cuts (including but not limited to EMA and tuition fees) will have on them
- but we also want to show that in reality EMA is used as a disciplinary tool (we don’t just defend how things are uncritically)
- their experience of the movement so far (good things, impressive things, but also the reality of repression which college students have faced, any stories resisting this would be good)

Get on it!

8. Next gathering

We agreed to have another gathering, and there is a mail list that is being formed to discuss it, if you want to get involved (you crazy fools!) then e-mail networkx@riseup.net with the title GATHERING.

9. Organisers critical reflections

Lessons learnt and recognitions of failings will be published in the next few days. Hopefully this can serve as a guide for future organisers, and provide a collaborative forum for skill sharing.

This was a first stab at a gathering like this and there were lots of lessons to be shared, so watch the next mail out for details of where and how to – but if you have any thoughts you want to share immediately please email networkx@riseup.net with the title REFLECTIONS

10 .QUESTIONS OF GATHERERS

We want contact details, links and information on all these things that were brought up at the gathering. Please email networkx@riseup.net with the title LINKS! Safe!

A few examples of gaps…

Details on Brighton carnivalesque action.
Details of Brighton training weekend
Details of Bristol guide for students at demos
Love police training in Cambridge
Tripod training collective in Scotland
Anarchist Black Cross Prisoner support
Squatters support and other housing support projects

We know it was a tad difficult at times, but if this is just some of what we can do when we get together, even when put together by a rag tag bunch of first timers, then the future looks pretty hopeful!

Lots of love
